EPIC GAMES / UNREAL ENGINE

Context / challenge – The name Epic Games might be synonymous with fans, having a 350 million player base on their ubiquitous Fortnite title, but what about the powerful 3D game engine behind it?  Despite completing impressive projects such as the movie Mandalorian, Unreal Engine was relatively unknown in this region.

Epic was keen to create awareness in Asia, driving the point that Unreal Engine is not only a tool for game and movie development, but ia powerful and real time 3D creation tool which is applied in industries such as aerospace, medicine, automotive, construction and impacting the works of film, broadcast, television, game and content creators, architecture and automotive.

Go big or go home.

The client’s wish was to tackle both Tier 1 as well as high viewership within one single activity. A tough ask, especially in a genre where it was leaps ahead of the conversations in 3D visualization. Our team curated a unique pitch which piqued the curiosity of the editor. With this Unreal Engine landed a spot with Astro, Malaysia’s leading  top broadcast publication with its 5 million viewership.

To create relevance, EPICs conversation was stitched with  local content – Malaysia’s digital economy – an industry which generated revenue of RM7.1 billion last year, making it an interesting topic to various audiences, such as business editors and daily publications.

A Virtual summit for gamers, developers, related industries.

As part of its continued effort to gain awareness of its powerful 3D visualization engine in Asia, Epic was keen to explore a virtual summit to reach out to specific industry associations and its members, focus groups and the media, given many were lacking in awareness and understanding.

We worked alongside Epic’s Singapore PR agency to create a compelling pitch that was easily understood by the lay person, novice yet gave enough depth to the experience. The focus was to highlight that EPIC has always been built on the synergy between developing games and technology that is applicable to other industries such as game development, architecture, vehicle design, film creation and others.

The focus was to highlight that EPIC has always been built on the synergy between developing games and technology that is applicable to other industries. We unpacked and explained why the Unreal Engine is used beyond games by pointing out just how similar the needs are for game development, architecture, vehicle design, film creation and others.

Fortunately for Epic, it turns out that making a powerful 3D engine that anybody can download for free opened up a lot of doors with publicity and coverage, resting on the foundation of good and clever PR.

The event was well attended by dailies, tech desk, business desks, magazines, focus groups and industry reps.
